SUPPORT THE AFSCME STRIKERS AT UC DAVIS:
At the UCD main campus there will be picket lines from 7am - 7pm at Russell and College and rallies at noon on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (July 14, 15, & 17).
There will be pickets at UCD Medical Center in Sacramento everyday (M-F) from 7am - 9pm. On Wednesday there will be a special rally at UCMC, time to be determined, which I will forward when I get the details.
Under our labor agreements, Librarians and Lecturers are not allowed to engage in sympathy strikes, so you must carry out any work duties. In so far as you can arrange flexible alternatives to coming to campus, I suggest you do so.
If you have to cross the picket line to get to work, I suggest putting a AFSCME support sign in your car window.
I would, however, strongly encourage all of you and especially librarians who are working this summer, to take advantage of your flexible schedules to attend the picket line when you can during the day and especially to come to the rallies at noon if you are off work then. Please wear your UC-AFT librarian tee-shirts and buttons.
AFSCME would love to have some of you speak at the rallies. I intend to represent us at at least some of the rallies as well. Showing solidarity with our sisters and brothers in AFSCME is important to our own interests when librarian bargaining resumes next fall. UPTE will also be bargaining in the fall.

Shields Library 'in trouble,' says librarians' union:
Other UC libraries receive more funding while UC Davis' national ranking falls
Written by PATRICK McCARTNEY
Published March 14, 2008 (The California Aggie)
Peter J. Shields Library's national ranking has plunged as a result of a lack of funding over the last fifteen years, according to a report released by UC Davis' unionized librarians.
University Council-American Federation Teachers (UC-AFT) Davis Local 2023, a union of UC Davis lecturers and librarians, released a fact sheet titled The UC Davis University Library is in Trouble, claiming that even though the campus has grown, the library's adjusted budget has remained virtually unchanged. Why UC-AFT has now opted back in to the UC wellness program: Staywell
(Karen Sawislak 3/10/2008)
To UC-AFT represented lecturers and librarians:
I am writing as a follow up to my January message about the new UC Wellness
program (Staywell). As you know, the UC-AFT Executive Board had joined all
of the other UC unions in opting out of this program, because it was not
clear to the Board that UC had made adequate provisions to ensure members'
privacy. Staywell Update
